Iceland photo tour
ARCTIC FOX EXPEDITION - NEW HORIZONS
11 – 21 March
This is our wildest ride in Iceland’s wilderness – the tour will take us to a new area in the north of the Hornstrandir peninsula. As in our usual winter arctic fox tour, we will enjoy a cozy accommodation in the middle of nowhere. This remote area offers the best scenery in all of Hornstrandir and many foxes roam the area. On fine days, small hiking options are also possible. We plan this trip on the mating season, so interaction between foxes will be our main goal.
Wildlife and Northern Lights photography
It is a very exclusive photographic trip to Iceland in which we will be able to photograph the arctic foxes in complete freedom and in their majestic winter fur. In this place far from civilization, the arctic foxes live protected from hunting and therefore, we can have closer encounters than elsewhere.
Our main goal on this trip will be to photograph the arctic fox at a key moment in its life: mating season. During the month of March (and especially at the end of the month) this activity that keeps the foxes in constant movement begins. This gives us the chance, not only to photograph tender moments between couples, but also fox intrusions from neighboring areas, playing around, fighting and much more.
We will take advantage of all the hours of the day to obtain the best possible images of the arctic foxes, as well as the impressive landscapes that this rugged area offers. During night, if the weather allows it, we can also enjoy night photography of stars and northern lights.

Itinerary
This itinerary is a summary. Write us if you want us to send you our complete PDF with all the details.
- 11 March:
International flight to Keflavík and transfer to Reykjavík. Night in guesthouse with breakfast. - 12 March:
After breakfast, we will fly to Isafjördur, a small fishing village in the Westfjords, where we can take a walk around and talk about the arctic fox and its habits before going to sleep. Night in guesthouse with breakfast - 13 March:
After breakfast we will go to the pier, where a boat will take us to the Hornstrandir Peninsula (about 2,5 h).
To disembark, since there is no dock, we will do it with the help of a rubber boat, which will help us transport our equipment as well as food for the next few days. Our expedition officially begins and who knows, it is possible that before dark we will have our first wildife encounters. - 14 – 27 March:
During the days that we are completely in Hornstrandir, we will spend most of our time with the arctic foxes.
In general, we will take most of the photographs from the vicinity of the house. Even so, if the snow conditions allow it, we can take short walks uphill (to the cliffs and lake) or following the coast. During these tours we can see the tracks of the foxes, observe some birds or simply enjoy the surrounding landscape but also find more foxes. During the nights we will be photographing starry landscapes and northern lights. - 18 March:
During the morning we will take the last photos of the environment and hopefully we will say goodbye to the arctic foxes with one last photo session.
Sometime between noon and early afternoon we will return to Isafjördur. Once in the town we can celebrate the success of our expedition and spend a quiet afternoon reviewing and commenting on photographs or taking a pleasant walk through the town.
Night in guesthouse with breakfast. - 19 March:
After breakfast we will move to Ísafjördur airport and pick a domestic flight to the capital (Reykjavík). After leaving our bags and resting briefly, we will go out for dinner to celebrate the success of our expedition and, in this way, we will have contact with society again after so many isolated days. Night in guesthouse with breakfast.
- 20 March:
Reykjavík will seem like a big city after so many days without seeing houses, cars or people, but it is inhabited by only 120,000 inhabitants (one third of the Icelandic population). We will spend the day touring the most photogenic streets and corners, visiting a museum or buying the odd souvenir. Night in hotel with breakfast. - 21 March:
At Keflavik airport we will take the flight back home.
*NOTE: The weather in the remote north of Iceland can be unpredictable and particularly harsh in winter. It is for this reason that we have chosen to have two extra days (Ísafjördur and Reykjavík) that allow us a minimum of movement in case we have to spend an extra night in Hornstrandir or Isafjördur for security reasons and to avoid the complication that could be missing the international flight.

Our trips for photographers: To begin with, we want to comment that it is a photographic trip and that therefore, both the hike and the pace of the walk are adapted to be able to enjoy them with a camera in hand. This means that the pace is very slow and with many stops.
That said, most of the time we will spend waiting around the house, waiting for the animals to come to us.
In case of good weather, we will be able to take walks uphill or following the coast, in search of new landscapes and other families of foxes. The maximum route in such a case would be a maximum of 2.5 km one way.

ABOUT HORNSTRANDIR
Hornstrandir Nature Reserve is an undisturbed and wild land. The last residents left the place in 1952 because of the harsh conditions of the place. There are no roads in the entire area and the place is only accessible by sea.
The landscape is magnificent in all directions. Fjords are made up of high mountains that rise abruptly from sea level. Winter dyes these greenish places in monochrome and we will have numerous opportunities to photograph it under the changing lights that the weather offers us during the expedition. That is why travelers should think about bringing wide angle lenses in addition to long focal ones.
The weather here can be very changeable, dramatic and fierce. One can expect that on the same day we will have rain, sun, wind and snow and therefore, it is easy to imagine how interesting light changes can be, offering us unique and unrepeatable moments and opportunities.
accommodation
Our accommodation will consist of an old farm recovered and renovated, converted into a paradise to enjoy this wonderful and lonely place as well as having a warm and comfortable place to return to after spending the day photographing the foxes.
The house is located at the outermost of the Horn Peninsula, the most picturesque and remote area of Hornstrandir. With a 360 degree vision we can easily observe the movements of the foxes as they come and go.
The house has recently been renovated and will help us during our adventure, both for its perfect location and for its amenities:
- Solar heating and energy system
- Outdoor sauna (great to regain strength after the cold)
- Enough energy to charge laptops and batteries (220V)
- The accommodation includes a person in charge of house maintenance, cleaning and cooking, which will consist of delicious Icelandic dishes
THE ARCTIC FOX AND OTHER WILDLIFE
The arctic fox is the star of this expedition. It is also the only native mammal in Iceland. It has to survive harsh conditions in a hostile environment with little food. They are very curious animals and, if we are patient, they can come close to us.
There are two color patterns in the fur of the arctic fox: the “blue” and “white”. The white is a characteristic of 95% of the world’s population, being the “blue” (brown, really), a true rarity. And what’s more interesting is that in the fjords of west Iceland, 80% of individuals are of this odd variety of colors.
Hornstrandir is the place in Iceland with the largest number of arctic foxes. Even so they are scattered and are very territorial. In our area, very close to the house, we can photograph different specimens. Although the vast majority have blue fur, there are possibilities to photograph the white one as well, as the photographs on this page (taken in March 2023) attest.
In addition to arctic foxes there are also seals around and a wide variety of birds. Not all remain in winter, but there is the possibility of seeing some very interesting species such as the eider, the harlequin duck, the boreal fulmar, the sandpiper or the raven.
