This photography trip is a new version of our ‘Arctic Fox and Northern Lights’ photography trip, with the difference that it is one day shorter and we are staying in a new location, which is more basic than usual. This is why travellers will notice a difference in the price of the trip, as this version is cheaper than usual.
This is an ideal trip for adventurous people who value adventure over comfort. We will stay for 6 days in a house with very basic amenities, with two rooms with bunk beds, a simple kitchen and a bathroom without a shower or running water. Despite this, this location gives us the opportunity to explore a new area and the foxes that inhabit it. Are you one of the adventurers we are looking for?
Our arctic fox photo tour is an exclusive trip in which you can photograph the arctic foxes in the wild and in their majestic winter coat. A week on the uninhabited Horstrandir peninsula, where foxes live protected from hunting and therefore, we can have close encounters, as the foxes don’t fear people there.
We will take advantage of all hours of the day to get the best possible images of the arctic fox in winter fur, as well as the landscapes offered by the fjords. In the evenings, we may also enjoy the Northern Lights.

*NOTE: The weather in the remote north of Iceland can be unpredictable and particularly harsh in winter. For this reason, we have chosen to have two days left (Ísafjördur and Reykjavík) to allow us a minimum of flexibility in case we have to spend an extra night in Hornstrandir or Isafjördur for safety reasons and to avoid the complications that could arise from missing our international flight.

3170 € per person (Hornstrandir only). Includes 6 days (16th to 21th March) on the remote Hornstrandir peninsula. This option is ideal if you are travelling around Iceland and want to take advantage of this adventure. With this option, we will meet at the pier on the day of departure. Hotels before or after Hornstrandir are not included.
Small group photography trip: Group size is 5 travellers + the guide. This allows us to offer more personalised teaching and attention, adapting to the abilities and interests of each student and/or traveller while reducing the impact we may have on wildlife.

Our trips for photographers: First of all, we would like to point out that this is a photography trip and, therefore, both the excursions and the pace of walking are adapted so that you can enjoy them with your camera in hand. This means that the pace is very slow and there are many stops.
That said, most of the time we will spend waiting around the house, waiting for the animals to come to us.
If the weather is good, we will be able to take walks into the valley to photograph landscapes and along the coast, in search of new landscapes and other fox families. The maximum distance in this case would be 2.5 km each way.

A deposit of 50% of the trip price is required.
You can book your own flights, but we recommend doing so through our partner agency, Travel Ponent, so that we can all arrive on the same flight.
We book the flights once the minimum group size has been reached. At this point, you can also make the second payment for the trip.
ABOUT HORNSTRANDIR
The Hornstrandir Nature Reserve is an unspoilt and wild land. The last residents left the area in 1952 due to the harsh conditions. There are no roads in the entire area and it is only accessible by sea.
The landscape is magnificent in every direction. The fjords are formed by high mountains that rise abruptly from sea level. Winter paints these green landscapes in monochrome, and we will have numerous opportunities to capture it under the changing light that the weather offers us during the expedition. That is why travellers should consider bringing wide-angle lenses as well as long focal lengths.
The weather here can be very changeable, dramatic and fierce. One can expect rain, sun, wind and snow on the same day, so it is easy to imagine how interesting the changes in light can be, offering us unique and unrepeatable moments and opportunities.
ACCOMMODATION
Our accommodation will consist of an old farm converted into a paradise to enjoy this wonderful and lonely landscape while having a warm and comfortable place to return to after spending the day photographing the foxes. The house is located at the South of Hornstrandir. With a 360-degree vision we can easily observe the movements of the foxes as they come and go.
The place is completely off-grid, so the house will most likely be cold when you arrive. We will turn the oil heating on as soon as we arrive but properly heating the whole house can take up to 24 hours. There are six bedrooms, capable of sleeping up to 9 guests, or 6 guests with no sharing of beds (two single bunk beds, one single bed, and four double beds plus one single bunk). The house has no electricity, and so lighting will be via solar panel, few LED lights and headlamps. To charge camera batteries, we will run the generator for a few hours after each day. There is no running water in the house, but plenty of sources to collect water nearby, which will be used for cooking and to flush the toilet. There is no shower in the house. It is very much an off-grid experience, and guests should be aware that it has very basic facilities. Sleeping is in made-up beds so you don’t need to bring sleeping bags.
The Arctic fox is the star of this expedition. It is also the only mammal native to Iceland, having to survive very harsh conditions in a hostile environment with little food. They are very curious animals and, if we are patient, they can come very close.
There are two colourings in the Arctic fox’s coat: ‘blue’ and “white”. White is characteristic of more than 90% of the world’s population, with ‘blue’ (actually brown) being a real rarity. And the most interesting thing is that in the fjords of western Iceland, 80% of individuals are of this rare colour variety.
Hornstrandir is the place in Iceland with the largest number of Arctic foxes. Even so, they are scattered and very territorial. In our area, very close to the house, we can photograph one or two pairs (2-4 individuals) of both colours (white and blue).
In addition to Arctic foxes, there is also a wide variety of birds. Not all of them stay in winter, but there is a chance to see some very interesting species, such as the snow partridge (also in its winter plumage), the eider, the harlequin duck, crows and several species of gulls. On rarer occasions, eagles or even a gyrfalcon can be seen.
